Promoting Your Work

Last updatedUpdated: by Simon Späti · CreatedCreated: · 2 min read

When you have a book or something you work on, you always need to promote it. Usually, no matter how good it is, it needs promotions. If you are going with a Book Publisher, e.g., for a book, they might do some, but the bulk will end up on you.

So how do you promote your work online?

# How I Approach it for My Book

For promoting my PoDE Book, what worked for me was slow, high-quality content over time. I’ve been writing online since 2015, and I’ve had a website since 2003, so when I started writing my book, I already had a larger audience. But yeah, at the end, the biggest investment is in writing quality chapters and articles.

# Share the Journey

What I learned in Show your Work book by Austin Kleon (I had the Audible version of the Steal like an artist Trilogy (Austin Kleon)), that you share the journey along the way. It’s interesting how you came up with the idea and how your workflow works.

Austin encourages everyone to show their work, so not only when you are finished, but also during the process. This motivated me to share more of the process. This is not promoting in the sense of talking big about your work, but by showcasing interesting parts of your work, you’re doing exactly that in a fun way.

Because learning along the way is interesting to others, they can learn too, and might get you subscribers to your newsletter (always have a newsletter :). Similarly, Learn in Public is another methodology that fits well here.
